Clean air in VAUDE tent interiors

July 24, 2020 – Intertek, an international testing and certification company, tested the enclosed air quality of our tents and found nothing but clean air.

No harmful substances in the enclosed air

Every now and then you hear about hazardous materials from textiles outgassing and polluting the air around them with harmful substances. Because they have to meet so many different demands, tents pose a special challenge – currently only some of our tents meet our very strict Green Shape criteria.

Naturally however, all of our tents are regularly tested in accordance with our very strict chemical pollutant criteria. Together with Intertek, an international testing and certification company, we have been able to demonstrate that the air quality of our tents is safe. For this purpose we developed our own methodology with Intertek Consumer Goods, Nuremberg.

Clean air in VAUDE tent interiors

Simulation in a climate chamber

Since it can be expected that more pollutants are released at higher temperatures, we assumed the worst possible conditions for our test: a pitched tent with closed zips sitting in the blazing sun all day long without the slightest wind movement, so that the interior air is literally trapped inside the tent.

To simulate this, we placed the tents in a climate chamber at temperatures over 30°C for 2 hours, which heated up the tent materials. The enclosed air was then extracted in test tubes and evaluated for over 50 pollutants. The types of substances tested were selected based on health relevance.

The results were more than impressive – no harmful substances could be detected in the enclosed air.
