Extensive sampling for more product safety

Chromium VI can form in leather after production and transportation. Therefore, we conduct thorough sampling of finished products.

Voluntarily recalled products

During the reporting period, there were no nonconformities that led to a fine. However, two articles - from identical materials and from the same supplier – were voluntarily recalled from the market because an official random sample found increased CrVI content. A laboratory report from the producer, which showed no evidence of increased "chromium VI" values, is available for these products.

Random samples of finished products

Chromium III is used exclusively for tanning. Chromium VI is not purposefully used, but it can arise when the tanning process is not carried out carefully. Body contact with residues of the highly toxic hexavalent chromium (chromium VI) can be carcinogenic or mutagenic. This problem can be prevented with careful process control of chrome tanning.

To ensure this, leather samples are regularly examined for chromium VI by our producers in certified test institutes. In addition, VAUDE conducts additional sampling of finished products in the course of its hazardous substances management program.
