Fuel still from fossil resources

Electricity and gas at VAUDE are 100% renewable, fuels – not yet. So economical driving, low-emission vehicles and alternative fuel vehicles are important.

Electric mobility as a vision for the company fleet

Let’s start the energy revolution ourselves – that’s VAUDE's maxim. We have long switched to 100% renewable energy sources for electricity and gas.

To a small extent, bio-fuels such as wheat ethanol or diesel from rapeseed oil do currently exist in Germany (5% to 7%). We are expecting the automobile industry to seriously deal with this issue

A quarter of energy is used for transport

Even though a quarter of all energy consumption is due to transport – there’s still no revolution in renewable energy or even electricity as a fuel in sight! So we are supporting the demands of environmental organizations on political institutions to quickly chart the course for this issue. Firstly, the technology of alternative fuel vehicles must evolve quickly so that electric cars become economical for us as a company. Secondly, we need a change of mindset toward public transport.

Fuel consumption for the company fleet

The VAUDE company fleet consists of 77 vehicles. Most of these are private vehicles for sales representatives and managers. These vehicles are available to employees for private use. Almost all vehicles have diesel engines, a few use petrol and several forklifts use LPG.

The good news is that for the first time in a long time, we were once again able to lower our fuel consumption compared to the previous year (-.55%).
The bad news is that fuel consumption per 100 kilometers driven has increased by 4% at the same time. We can only guess as to why this has happened: More kilometers spent on urban driving than on the autobahn? Higher fuel consumption of new vehicles, contrary to the manufacturer's specifications? We don’t know the reasons, but we recognize our need for action.

In the restructuring of our company fleet, we are focusing on three objectives:

  • Reducing the number of vehicles
  • Switching to alternative fuel vehicles
  • Driver training for higher safety and lower fuel consumption

From our carbon footprint we know that business travel – which includes the fuel consumption of company fleets – makes up over half of emissions at our Obereisenbach location. The issue of mobility and transport is therefore one of our significant instruments for further reducing greenhouse emissions.

Fuel in the supply chain

All figures and explanations given here relate to the VAUDE company headquarters in Obereisenbach. We cannot make calculations for the supply chain as yet, due to a lack of available data.
