Slow fashion versus the throwaway society

It's unbelievable how full our wardrobes and basements have become. Does this sound like you? We’ve put together a few suggestions to help.

Trend today, garbage tomorrow?

One million tons of used clothing accumulates each year in Germany alone. Used clothes! Products we want to get rid of!

Do we really need that much Stuff? Trying to keep up with every trend? Ever thought of what that involves regarding the consumption of raw materials, the wasting of energy and water, toxic chemicals? Where does it all go?

Isn't it much more fun to carefully select a beautiful new product and then protect it and cherish it for years?

We feel responsible for our products – even long after they have left the stores. Together with you, we want to make the world a bit better. Sometimes less really is more.

Strengthening immunity to shopping-fever

Of course VAUDE also depends on sales – and of course we have to sell products. However, our VAUDE products are made to last. We want them to look good for years, to be repairable, and to have some social benefit when you no longer need them.

VAUDE products are timeless and leave flash trends by the wayside. We are constantly looking for innovative sustainable solutions that reduce the ecological footprint of our products and, at the same time, increase your fun factor in the outdoors.

Care, repair, donate

Our product spends a good part of its "life" with you. At the end of the day, you have a direct influence on how sustainable it really is – depending on how good the product had it at your place...

Good care makes your product fit for the next time you head out on an adventure in the mountains or on a bike tour. If something is broken, don't throw it right out: Repairing is fun, it's good for the environment – and it’s good for your wallet.

Many people are really happy to find secondhand products that are in good shape, either for a good price or as a donation.

Or try out renting instead of buying?

You can make creative new things from old products and other materials.

VAUDE and Greenpeace for a more sustainable life

With the VAUDE Greenpeace Detox Commitment, we have committed ourselves to making an active contribution to a system change towards more sustainable design and consumption. Specifically, this includes:

  • The promotion of Circular Design and circulatory product development to slow down and close down material and production cycles
  • Analysis and evaluation of production waste
  • Introduction of return systems for used VAUDE products
  • Development of new models for products such as secondhand use, renting or upcycling
  • Publication of detailed instructions for the sustainable use, care and repair of VAUDE products in order to extend the utilization phase as far as possible
  • Raising public awareness and awareness among all stakeholders

Of course, this doesn't happen at the touch of a button, but we're working on it. You can help us.

Founded in 1994: VAUDE ECOLOG Recycling Network

VAUDE is currently not accepting products or packaging for recycling. However, VAUDE was a pioneer in this issue long before the "Green Wave" hit the industry: as early as 1994, the “VAUDE Ecolog Recycling Network” was established – the first recycling system in the industry for pure polyester products with collection and recycling. Ecolog products were technically engineered to be easily returned into the polyester fiber cycle. The “Ecolog Recycling Network” was equipped with the infrastructure needed. However, because too few products were returned to make the system “sustainable”, we had to end the program.

From various studies, we know that the amount of collected products must be large enough to compensate for the logistical effort. We also know that a single brand with its own recycling system can only ever remain a niche, and has a very low impact on the overall consumption of raw materials and customer behavior in returning products.

Closing the VAUDE material loop in practice remains an important challenge for the coming years.
