Fuel still from fossil sources

Electricity and gas at VAUDE are 100% renewable. To date, fuels are not yet so. Economical driving and low-emission vehicles are therefore important.

Electromobility as a vision for the company fleet

Let’s start the energy revolution ourselves - that is VAUDE's motto. We have long switched to 100% renewable energy sources for electricity and gas.

To a small extent, bio-fuels such as wheat ethanol or diesel from rapeseed oil do currently exist in Germany (5 to 7%). But a real revolution towards renewable energy or even electricity as a fuel is not yet in sight.

A quarter of energy for transport

And this is true despite the fact that a quarter of all energy consumption is related to transport ! We therefore support the demands of environmental organizations on political institutions to quickly chart the course for this issue: firstly, the technology of alternative engine types must evolve quickly so that electric vehicles are economical for us as a company. Secondly, we need a change of mindset towards public transport.

Fuel consumption for the company fleet

The VAUDE company fleet consists of about 75 vehicles. Most of these are cars for sales representatives and managers. These vehicles are available to employees for private use. Almost all vehicles have diesel engines, a few use petrol and several forklifts use LPG.

It is gratifying to see that we were able to reduce the number of kilometers traveled for the first time in a long time (minus 4%), and that fuel consumption in total has increased only marginally (0.25%).
Unfortunately, fuel consumption per 100 kilometers driven has increased by 4% at the same time. We can only make a guess at why this is so: more urban transport instead of highway kilometers? Higher consumption of new vehicles, contrary to the manufacturer's specifications? We do not know the reasons, but we recognize our need for action.

In the transformation of our company fleets, we are therefore focusing on three objectives:

  • Reducing the number of vehicles
  • Switching to alternative engines
  • Driving training for more safety and less fuel consumption

From our climate balance we know that business travel – which includes the fuel consumption of company fleets – makes up over half of emissions at our Tettnang-Obereisenbach location. The issue of mobility and transport is therefore one of our significant instruments for further reducing climate emissions.

All figures and explanations given here relate to the VAUDE company headquarters in Tettnang-Obereisenbach. We cannot make calculations for the supply chain as yet, due to a lack of available data.
