Safe production

When there are complaints about safety in the workplace in a Fair Wear Foundation audit, remedial measures can usually be quickly implemented. Such complaints include things such as emergency exits that must always be sign posted and open, good lighting and ventilation, safe, regularly maintained equipment, breathing masks and noise protection where appropriate, first aid kits, adequate numbers of fire extinguishers and ergonomic workstations.

Health and safety protection evaluated by FWF

Relatively few chemicals are used for sewing production, and fire protection regulations are strictly adhered to in both Vietnam and in China, which are our major production centers. Health protection is very important, as is the ergonomics of the workplace.

In addition to labor laws, occupational health and safety issues are covered by the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF). These are comprehensively evaluated at our producers and appropriate measures are taken in response.

Action is usually taken quickly

Complaints most often come to light during the initial audit. Necessary action is usually quickly and easily implemented.

In the audits, there were a total of 108 complaints. The main concerns were:

  • lack of signage for the emergency exit; lack of emergency lighting
  • no use of mouth guards or protective masks
  • fire extinguisher not checked regularly
  • fire extinguisher standing on the ground, instead of being fixed to the wall
  • fire drills only once a year instead of twice a year
  • no ergonomic program
  • dangerous cables, switches, fuses
  • uncontrolled handling of chemicals
  • no safety training for new employees
  • no permanent, nominated Safety Officer in larger facilities
  • escape routes blocked by goods, especially during the high season
  • lack of safety devices on machines

Ergonomic posture is also evaluated

An important point about health in the sewing textile industry is the risk of injury from non-ergonomic working stations. The Fair Wear Foundation checks working stations during the audits and provides recommendations for the implementation of ergonomic measures.
